Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, insisting that the administration is taking steps to address Nigeria’s economic challenges despite persistent hardship faced by citizens.

Barau’s position comes amid a debate over the performance of Nigeria’s democracy and the extent to which government policies are improving living conditions. Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo recently argued that democracy must deliver tangible benefits to citizens, warning that economic hardship and poor governance could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.

Responding to the concerns, Barau maintained that the Tinubu administration had introduced reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, improving government revenue and creating a foundation for sustainable growth.

The deputy senate president argued that the effects of major economic reforms could take time to translate into improved living standards, urging Nigerians to assess the administration’s policies within the context of the challenges inherited by the government.

He pointed to efforts to strengthen public finances, attract investment and expand economic opportunities as part of the government’s broader strategy to address longstanding structural problems.

Barau also called for patience and cooperation, maintaining that the administration remained committed to improving the country’s economic outlook.

However, the debate reflects continuing public concerns over rising food prices, transportation costs, unemployment and declining purchasing power. While the government has defended its reforms as necessary to establish a stronger economic foundation, critics have questioned whether sufficient relief has reached households struggling with the cost of living.

Osinbajo’s comments have renewed discussions about the relationship between democracy, governance and economic performance, particularly the need for elected leaders to demonstrate that policy decisions are improving citizens’ welfare.

Barau’s response underscores the position of the ruling All Progressives Congress that the administration’s economic measures are intended to address Nigeria’s structural challenges and deliver longer-term benefits.
