Suspected bandits have killed five forest guards in a fresh attack on Nuku village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The assailants reportedly stormed the community around 3:00 a.m. on Friday, firing sporadically and causing panic among residents as they carried out the हमला.

According to a community source, the attackers arrived in large numbers and operated for hours without resistance, killing several people, including newly recruited forest guards.

“They entered through their usual route in large numbers and started shooting directly,” the source said, adding that the victims were caught off guard during the assault.

In addition to the killings, properties were destroyed, with motorcycles belonging to the forest guards set ablaze, alongside patrol vehicles operated by mobile police officers.

The Kwara State Police Command had yet to release an official statement as of the time of the report. Police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said she was still awaiting details of the incident.

The latest attack has heightened fear among residents, coming barely two months after a deadly assault on Woro and nearby communities in the same area, where over 200 people were reportedly killed and many others abducted.

Tensions have further increased following the emergence of a recent video showing abducted villagers pleading for government intervention, with some captives saying they have been held since early February.

Despite assurances from the state government about ongoing rescue efforts, residents say the renewed violence highlights the continued vulnerability of rural communities in the area.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
