Bandits have launched multiple attacks on communities in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, killing at least 16 vigilante members and abducting 42 residents.

The assaults occurred between Sunday, November 9, and Thursday, November 13, 2025, forcing many villagers to flee their homes for safety.

A community source said the attackers first hit Dutsen Magaji village on Sunday, kidnapping 22 residents.
“When they struck on Sunday, the vigilantes pursued them and engaged them in a gunfight,” he said. “Three vigilantes were killed, and five people are currently receiving treatment.”

He added that the bandits returned in the early hours of Thursday, November 13, this time targeting Magama village. They reportedly surrounded a mosque during morning prayers and seized more than 20 worshippers.

According to the source, vigilantes who attempted to track the bandits were ambushed. Thirteen were killed in the attack, while several others sustained injuries.

In a statement, the Press Secretary to the Chairman of Mashegu LGA, Isah Ibrahim Bokuta, confirmed the incident, praising the vigilantes as heroes who gave their lives to protect their communities. He noted that the local government deeply appreciates their courage and dedication.
