Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has urged political parties and candidates to avoid actions and statements that could threaten Nigeria’s peace ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bamidele, who also chairs the South-West Caucus in the National Assembly, made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

He said political actors had the right to pursue their ambitions but must do so within the provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The Ekiti lawmaker warned against hate speech, inflammatory remarks and other activities that could contribute to political unrest or ethno-religious violence.

He urged political parties and candidates to conduct their campaigns peacefully and with restraint, stressing the importance of protecting national unity and democratic stability.

Bamidele said Nigeria’s political heritage was greater than the ambitions of individual politicians or parties and should not be put at risk during the election period.

He also called on political actors to ensure that their campaign programmes reflected the aspirations of Nigerians and contributed to the country’s development.

As preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, Bamidele urged stakeholders to respect electoral rules and prioritise peaceful political competition.

He said the 66th anniversary should remind political leaders of their responsibility to protect Nigeria’s unity and democratic institutions.
