BALLON D’OR 2026: NOMINEES ANNOUNCED AS FOOTBALL’S BIGGEST STARS MAKE THE LIST

The 2026 Ballon d’Or race has officially begun, with France Football releasing nominees across several award categories ahead of the ceremony scheduled for October 26 in London. The 70th edition of the prestigious awards will recognise outstanding performances from the 2025/26 season, with prizes covering the men’s and women’s categories, young players, goalkeepers, coaches and clubs.

Among the early names confirmed are several of the biggest stars in world football. England and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is one of the leading contenders for the men’s prize after a prolific campaign, while Barcelona and Spain youngster Lamine Yamal is also expected to be a major challenger following his impressive season and World Cup success. Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and other elite performers are also in contention as the shortlist takes shape.

The goalkeeper category has also produced a strong field, with Morocco and Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou nominated alongside Thibaut Courtois, Joan García, Gregor Kobel, Emiliano Martínez, Édouard Mendy, David Raya, Unai Simón, Matvey Safonov and Cape Verde international Vozinha. The nominations highlight the performances of goalkeepers across Europe and beyond during the assessment period.

Several major clubs have also been recognised in the Club of the Year category. Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Flamengo and Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt are among the clubs nominated, while prominent coaches including Mikel Arteta, Luis Enrique and Jonatan Giráldez feature among the nominees for the Johan Cruyff Trophy.

The final winners will be announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on October 26. With the leading individual contenders now emerging and more categories being confirmed, attention will turn to the final men’s and women’s shortlists and the battle to succeed 2025 winner Ousmane Dembélé.
