BABACHIR LAWAL ACCUSES TINUBU GOVT OF IMPORTING EXPIRED RICE, MAIZE THAT HURT LOCAL FARMERS

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has come out strongly against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of importing expired food items into Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on Sunday, Lawal, who is also a large-scale farmer, said the influx of expired rice and maize is crippling local agriculture and making farming unprofitable.

“Last year, we sold maize for as high as N110,000 per bag, and fertilizer was N45,000,” he explained. “Today, fertilizer has shot up to N70,000, but the price of maize has crashed to N65,000 because the government flooded the market with expired imported grains.”

Lawal said this situation is discouraging farmers across the country, describing agriculture under the current administration as “a lost venture.”

Beyond agriculture, the former SGF also criticized the Tinubu government for failing to improve the living conditions of Nigerians. He claimed the president's appointments were politically calculated to divide rather than unite the country.

He further revealed that a coalition of political leaders from the North is already working on a plan to ensure the All Progressives Congress (APC) is voted out of power in the 2027 elections.

“Even the Muslims who supported him are now disappointed. He has alienated and embarrassed them,” Lawal said.

His remarks add to growing concerns about the rising cost of food, harsh economic conditions, and dissatisfaction with the federal government’s policies — especially in agriculture and food security.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
