AWONIYI STARS ON COVENTRY DEBUT AS NIGERIAN STRIKER SCORES AND ASSISTS IN CUP VICTORY

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi delivered an impressive performance for Coventry City, scoring his first goal for the club and providing an assist as they defeated Plymouth Argyle 4–2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Awoniyi needed just three minutes to make his mark, finishing a pass from Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi to put Coventry ahead. Just two minutes later, he turned provider, setting up Jack Rudoni for Coventry's second goal as the visitors made a blistering start.

Plymouth responded strongly after falling two goals behind. Oliver Irow pulled one back in the 21st minute before Xavier Amaechi restored parity nine minutes into the second half, leaving Coventry facing the possibility of surrendering their early advantage.

Coventry eventually regained control through substitute Ephron Mason-Clark, who restored their lead in the 67th minute. Victor Torp then converted a penalty in the 78th minute to complete the scoring and send Frank Lampard's side into the third round of the competition.

The performance marked an encouraging start for Awoniyi at Coventry following his move from Nottingham Forest. It was only his second appearance for the club after making his debut in the 3–0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal. The Nigerian forward's goal and assist will provide a major confidence boost as he looks to establish himself in his new team.
