Austrian defender David Alaba will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after five years with the Spanish giants, the club confirmed on Friday.

The 33-year-old centre-back joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich in 2021 and went on to become an important part of one of the club’s most successful eras, despite battling a series of injury setbacks in recent seasons.

During his time at the Santiago Bernabéu, Alaba made 131 appearances and won 11 major trophies, including two UEFA Champions League titles and two La Liga crowns.

In a statement, Real Madrid thanked the Austrian international for his contributions and described him as a player who helped shape one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Alaba is expected to bid farewell to supporters on Saturday when Real Madrid hosts Athletic Bilbao in their final La Liga match of the season.

The defender will share the farewell occasion with right-back Dani Carvajal and departing coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

Although Alaba has yet to announce his next club, he is expected to captain Austria at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

His departure marks the end of a trophy-laden spell in Madrid, where he established himself as a key figure in defence whenever fit.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
