ATIKU SLAMS INEC OVER POOR JUDGMENT, SEEKS DELAY OF 2027 ELECTION

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently review the February 20, 2027 date set for Nigeria’s next general elections, describing it as insensitive and poorly timed.

The scheduled date falls within the Ramadan period, which is expected to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027. In a statement shared on his verified X account, Atiku argued that holding elections during Ramadan could hinder voter participation and compromise the inclusivity of the electoral process.

He said the decision to fix such a critical civic exercise in the middle of a major religious observance demonstrates poor judgment and a lack of sensitivity to Nigeria’s socio-religious realities.

“Elections are not mere administrative rituals; they are national exercises requiring maximum participation, physical endurance, and collective focus. Scheduling them during a sacred period of fasting, reflection, and spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims reflects troubling insensitivity,” Atiku stated.

He added that in a diverse country like Nigeria, inclusive planning is essential, and even something as basic as setting an appropriate date should reflect competence, foresight, and respect for citizens.

Atiku concluded by questioning INEC’s preparedness: “If the commission struggles with something as simple as timing, Nigerians are justified in asking: what assurance do we have that it will competently deliver free, fair, and credible elections in 2027?”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
