Presidential hopefuls under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are set to sign a formal agreement pledging their support for whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate.

Rotimi Amaechi, one of the leading aspirants within the coalition movement, confirmed the development on Friday in a statement to LEADERSHIP.

Among those who have declared their intention to run on the ADC platform are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

While speculation persists that the party may zone its presidential ticket to the North—potentially favoring Atiku—ADC’s interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, has dismissed the notion of any preferred candidate. The former Senate President emphasized that his leadership will ensure a fully transparent primary process.

Amaechi also stressed the importance of defining transparency in the upcoming primary. He warned of potential manipulation if standards aren’t clearly set, even under the guise of a fair process.

“We agreed in principle that whoever emerges from a transparent primary will receive the full support of the others,” Amaechi said. “But we must first agree on what ‘transparent’ truly means, because it's easy for someone to hijack the process and still claim it was transparent.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
