ATALANTA COACH SENDS BEST WISHES TO LOOKMAN AFTER ATLETICO MOVE
Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino has accepted Ademola Lookman’s departure to Atletico Madrid as part of the realities of modern football, expressing gratitude for the Nigeria international’s contributions to the club.
The 28-year-old’s €40 million transfer to the Spanish capital came just days after Atalanta president Luca Percassi insisted the forward was not available for sale, despite Napoli’s interest.
Palladino acknowledged Lookman’s ambitions while praising his service to the Italian side.
“It’s a dynamic that’s part of today’s football,” the 41-year-old told Tutto Atalanta. “Lookman made this important request, expressed his desire to seize the opportunity, and chose Atletico Madrid. You have to respect his decision and thank him for what he gave.
“We are excited about the strong players still at our disposal and remain determined to continue surprising people.”
At Atletico Madrid, manager Diego Simeone quickly lauded Lookman, the 2024 African Player of the Year, noting that the forward could feature for Los Colchoneros immediately.
Lookman completed his four-year deal on Monday and joined training a day later alongside fellow winter signings Rodri Mendoza and Obed Vargas.
“Three important players have arrived, and we’ll need them as we work together to finish the season strongly,” Simeone said via Spidy Atletico.
The Argentine coach highlighted Lookman’s impact on the squad.
“He integrated into the group quickly, and his physical strength, speed, ability to change the play, and power in the final third were immediately evident,” Simeone added. “We hope he contributes both in the way he believes he can and in the way we expect. Building strong partnerships within the team is crucial, and that’s what this is all about: bringing quality players together.”
Following his official unveiling on Tuesday, when he was handed the number 22 shirt, Lookman shared his excitement for the new chapter.
“Proud and excited to start this new chapter. I’m happy to join Atletico de Madrid, a massive club with rich history and passion,” the winger posted on X.
“New city, new challenges, new energy. I’m ready to give everything on the pitch and fight for these colours every time I step out there. Let’s get to work, Aupa.”
Lookman’s move concludes a productive spell in Italy, where he scored 55 goals and provided 27 assists in 137 matches for Atalanta over three-and-a-half seasons.
