ASUU THREATENS SHUTDOWN OF LAGOS STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES OVER UNRESOLVED WELFARE ISSUES
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to shut down Lagos State-owned universities if the state government fails to address lingering welfare concerns and implement outstanding agreements with lecturers.
The union warned that it could embark on an indefinite industrial action if its demands are not met within the stipulated period, saying it had exhausted dialogue with the state government and university authorities.
ASUU said the warning followed the continued non-implementation of agreed welfare packages and other conditions of service, which it described as detrimental to the quality of teaching, research and learning in the affected institutions.
According to the union, lecturers have remained patient despite repeated assurances from the authorities, but the prolonged delay has left members frustrated.
The union maintained that while several state governments have begun implementing the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement in their universities, Lagos State must also take urgent steps to fulfil its obligations and avert disruption of academic activities.
ASUU stressed that it remains committed to industrial harmony but insisted that the welfare of its members could no longer be neglected.
The union appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other relevant stakeholders to intervene immediately, warning that failure to act could lead to a total shutdown of academic activities in the state's universities.
The union added that its decision would be guided by the response of the state government, expressing hope that the issues would be resolved through constructive engagement before the expiration of its ultimatum.
