ASUU THREATENS FRESH STRIKE OVER UNPAID SALARIES, UNFULFILLED AGREEMENT WITH FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a possible nationwide industrial action over what it described as the poor implementation of its December 2025 agreement with the Federal Government.

The union accused the government of failing to fully address several lingering issues affecting university lecturers, including unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and other outstanding entitlements.

The warning followed the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at Modibbo Adama University.

ASUU Lists Outstanding Demands

Speaking to journalists in Abuja after the meeting, ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, said lecturers were becoming increasingly frustrated over what he described as the government’s lack of commitment to their welfare.

According to him, unresolved issues include the withholding of three-and-a-half months’ salaries, unpaid promotion arrears, salary shortfalls linked to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), unremitted third-party deductions, and outstanding arrears from the 25–35 per cent wage award.

Piwuna warned that continued neglect of the agreement could trigger another round of industrial unrest within the nation’s university system.

“The increasing frustration occasioned by the seeming government’s disinterestedness in the welfare of Nigerian academics is brewing a pent-up anger which could erupt into a new wave of industrial unrest if not addressed,” he stated.

Union Calls for Urgent Government Action

The ASUU president appealed to both the Federal and state governments to urgently implement all agreements reached with the union in order to prevent disruption in public universities.

He stressed that ASUU remains willing to engage the government through dialogue but insisted that concrete action must be taken to resolve the lingering issues.

According to Piwuna, the union’s National Executive Council will reconvene in the coming weeks to reassess the situation and determine the next course of action if there is no significant progress.

“Our union’s doors remain open for working with the government to realise all our demands,” he said.

He also called on Nigerians, parents, and stakeholders in the education sector to pressure the government into honouring its commitments in the interest of students and the country’s education system.

The latest warning has renewed concerns over the possibility of another prolonged strike in Nigerian public universities, as students and parents continue to fear further disruptions to the academic calendar.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
