ASUU REJECTS FG–COVENTRY UNIVERSITY AGREEMENT TO ESTABLISH NIGERIAN CAMPUS
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has opposed a recent agreement between the Federal Government and the Coventry University to establish a branch campus in Nigeria.
In a statement, ASUU argued that the proposed arrangement raises concerns over academic standards, staff employment, and long-term sustainability. The union claimed that without proper planning and consultation with local universities, such partnerships could undermine the quality of higher education in the country.
ASUU further urged the Federal Government to involve Nigerian academic institutions in the decision-making process and to ensure that any foreign partnerships prioritize local talent development, research, and equitable access for students.
The Federal Government, however, has maintained that the collaboration aims to expand educational opportunities, boost research, and attract international standards to the Nigerian higher education system. Negotiations between both parties are reportedly ongoing as stakeholders seek a resolution.
