Afrobeats star Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of a young woman during a stampede outside the venue of his concert in Nairobi, Kenya.

The incident occurred on December 20 at the Nyayo National Stadium, where the singer performed as part of his ongoing Africa tour. According to the BBC, Kenya’s National Police Service confirmed that a 20-year-old woman, identified as Karen Lojore, was crushed to death near one of the stadium’s entry points.

A police spokesperson explained that a brief stampede broke out at the entrance to the venue as fans attempted to gain access. Although order was later restored and the concert went on as planned, the woman sustained fatal injuries during the rush.

Reacting to the tragic development, Asake described the incident as heartbreaking in a message shared on his Instagram Story on Monday. He said he was devastated by the loss and extended his condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

“My heart goes out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Karen Lojore,” the singer wrote, adding that he would do his best to understand what happened and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. He noted that music has always been his way of spreading love and joy, and expressed pain that such a tragedy occurred in connection with his performance.

Asake also offered prayers for the deceased, wishing her peaceful rest and extending blessings to Kenya.

The concert, held at the 18,000-capacity Nyayo National Stadium, was co-headlined by British-Nigerian singer Gabzy. It attracted thousands of fans, reflecting Asake’s growing popularity across Africa.

The incident recalls a previous tragedy linked to the artist. In December 2022, two people died following a crowd crush at his concert at London’s Brixton Academy, an event for which Asake had earlier expressed grief and sympathy to the victims’ families.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
