The Nigerian Army has begun an investigation into the death of a 13-year-old boy, Timothy Daniel, who was killed on January 1, 2026, in Ette, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, while urging the public to refrain from speculation that could undermine the process.

Timothy was reportedly shot during an encounter involving a soldier attached to Sterling Petrochemical and Fertiliser Limited. The incident, which has drawn public attention and emotional reactions, is alleged to have occurred when the minor intervened to stop what was described as inappropriate advances toward his 15-year-old sister, Miracle Daniel.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Uyo, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at Headquarters 2 Brigade, Captain Lawal Muhammad, said investigations were ongoing and that no conclusions had been reached.

He explained that the Army acted immediately in line with standard procedures by instituting a formal investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. According to him, premature conclusions or public commentary could jeopardise the integrity of the investigation.

The Army appealed to members of the public to exercise restraint, stressing that all facts must be carefully established before any official position is taken. Captain Muhammad assured that the outcome of the investigation would be made public once concluded, in accordance with existing laws and military regulations.

The Nigerian Army also expressed deep sympathy to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as unfortunate and painful. The statement conveyed condolences to Timothy Daniel’s parents and loved ones, while praying for the repose of the young boy’s soul.

Reaffirming its stance on discipline, the Army reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and strict adherence to rules of engagement by its personnel. It emphasised that any act found to be contrary to military standards would be addressed appropriately after investigations are completed.

The Army further appreciated the cooperation and understanding of the public as it works to ensure that justice is served through due process
