The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an urgent investigation into a viral video showing Nigerian soldiers reportedly complaining about poor food supplies.

The video, which made rounds on social media and was later picked up by mainstream media, shows troops displaying food items they allegedly received, sparking public concern over the welfare of frontline personnel.

In a statement released by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, the army said the matter is being treated seriously. While the full context of the video remains unclear, the Chief of Army Staff assured that the findings from the investigation will be made public in the interest of transparency and accountability.

Lt.-Gen. Oluyede reaffirmed the army’s commitment to the welfare of its troops through its “Soldier First” initiative — a policy that prioritises the well-being, dignity, and readiness of soldiers and their families.

However, he also reminded military personnel to follow the proper internal channels when airing grievances, warning that using social media or other unauthorised platforms to complain is against military ethics and discipline.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to uphold high standards of leadership, welfare, and operational excellence,” the statement said. “Our soldiers' welfare is central to all we do, and any legitimate concern raised will be addressed swiftly and professionally.”

The move has been welcomed by many Nigerians who continue to advocate for improved treatment of the country’s military personnel.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
