APM SUES INEC, PRP’S SHEHU BUBA OVER ALLEGED BREACH OF 21-DAY PRIMARY NOTICE RULE
The Allied Peoples Movement has asked the Federal High Court in Bauchi to examine the eligibility of Senator Shehu Buba Umar as the Peoples Redemption Party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The suit, filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission, Buba and his running mate, alleges that the PRP failed to give the required notice before conducting its primary.
Speaking after filing the case on Friday, October 23, APM Legal Adviser Jidauna Tula said Buba contested the APC governorship primary on May 22 before moving to the PRP.
According to Tula, the PRP subsequently held a primary on May 26 and selected Buba as its candidate.
The APM argues that the exercise breached electoral provisions requiring political parties to notify INEC at least 21 days before holding a nomination primary.
Tula said the party should have submitted its notice on or before May 5 for the May 26 exercise. He alleged that it failed to do so and maintained that the omission invalidated the primary.
The claims form the basis of the APM’s legal challenge and remain subject to the court’s determination. The information provided did not include responses from INEC, the PRP or Buba.
