APC SET TO NAME MINISTER NENTAWE YILWATDA AS ACTING NATIONAL CHAIRMAN
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly set to name Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, as its Acting National Chairman.
According to sources, the announcement is expected to be made during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled to hold in Abuja on Thursday — barring any last-minute changes.
This development follows the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje as APC National Chairman on June 27. In the interim, the party had appointed the Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, to fill the role temporarily.
Prof. Yilwatda, a respected academic, engineer, and politician from Plateau State, was appointed minister by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024. He had earlier contested the 2023 Plateau State governorship election under the APC but lost to the PDP candidate.
Despite challenging the outcome in court, he accepted the Supreme Court’s judgment when it ruled in favour of the PDP.
Yilwatda is no stranger to public service. He served as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Benue State between 2017 and 2021 and was the ICT Director at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, for over a decade. During the 2023 general elections, he also served as the Tinubu/Shettima campaign coordinator in Plateau State.
With strong political ties, including a long-standing relationship with former Plateau governor Simon Lalong, Yilwatda’s possible emergence as acting national chairman is seen as a strategic move to stabilize the party and address internal disagreements.
In addition to the leadership announcement, the APC’s NEC meeting is expected to focus on pressing internal issues currently threatening the unity of the party.
