APC PRIMARIES: NANS DEMANDS CONSIDERATION FOR EX-STUDENT LEADERS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prioritise former student leaders in its forthcoming primaries, saying such inclusion would strengthen youth representation and broaden political participation.

The call was made during the presentation of a House of Representatives nomination form to NANS immediate past president, Lucky Emonefe, who is contesting for the Ethiope Federal Constituency seat in Delta State.

Speaking at the event on Wednesday, NANS President, Olusola Ladoja, said the association sponsored Emonefe’s nomination form in recognition of his service and leadership during his tenure.

“We took the decision to purchase the nomination form for Comrade Lucky Emonefe in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the student body during his tenure,” Ladoja said.

He argued that former student leaders are well-positioned for elective office due to their grassroots exposure, organisational experience, and engagement with youth issues.

Ladoja urged the APC to give special consideration to ex-student leaders seeking political office, saying the party stands to gain broader youth support if it does so.

“We urge the APC to give due consideration to former student leaders aspiring for elective positions,” he added.

He also noted Emonefe’s involvement in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund initiative and alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” as factors that make him a credible candidate.

According to him, greater inclusion of young leaders would improve political participation and strengthen democratic representation.

“The ruling party will attract massive support from students across the country if individuals with strong backgrounds in student leadership are allowed to serve,” he said.

Responding, Emonefe described the endorsement as a strong vote of confidence, adding that it motivates him to pursue a people-focused legislative agenda.

He pledged to prioritise youth development, education, and economic empowerment if elected, while committing to transparency and accountability in governance.

“I remain committed to delivering effective and people-centred representation,” he said.

The event was attended by student leaders and stakeholders who praised NANS for encouraging youth participation in politics.

NANS, which represents students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, has historically served as a training ground for political leadership.

The group’s latest call reflects growing pressure on political parties to integrate younger candidates into elective positions, especially as issues such as education, unemployment, and youth empowerment remain central to national debates.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
