Tinubu Still Enjoys Strong Backing in the North – APC Leader

Ayo Oyalowo, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to enjoy solid support in northern Nigeria, despite claims from some political voices suggesting otherwise.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Oyalowo dismissed speculations that Tinubu’s popularity in the North has waned ahead of the 2027 elections. He argued that the region is well-represented in the current administration, pointing to several key appointments, including the Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) from Kano.

According to him, many of those criticising the president are simply disgruntled because they didn’t get the political positions or benefits they expected.

Oyalowo also highlighted recent scenes from Sokoto and Bauchi, where students were seen celebrating after the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), paid their school fees.

“That video was not from Ogbomoso or Lagos — it was Sokoto. These are real people, real students, thanking Tinubu for paying their fees,” he noted.

While acknowledging that some Nigerians are focused on the nation’s economic challenges, Oyalowo urged them not to overlook the positive developments taking place under Tinubu’s leadership.

He further mentioned that several northern governors, including those of Katsina and Kaduna, have openly praised the president’s efforts in the region.

“Yes, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has been critical, but the real people in the North still support Tinubu,” Oyalowo insisted.

The APC chieftain’s comments come as the political atmosphere gradually heats up ahead of the 2027 general elections, with questions about the president’s performance and regional support taking centre stage.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
