ANTONIO RüDIGER ENDS GERMANY CAREER AFTER 12 YEARS AND 86 CAPS

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his 12-year career with the Germany national team to an end after 86 appearances.

The 33-year-old confirmed his decision in a statement shared on social media, explaining that he had spent time considering his future before deciding to step away and create an opportunity for the next generation of German players.

Rüdiger made his senior Germany debut in 2014 and gradually established himself as an important member of the national team. Over the course of his international career, the centre-back represented his country at major tournaments and became a regular presence in Germany’s defence.

Reflecting on his journey, Rüdiger said he never imagined that his first appearance in the famous German jersey would eventually lead to 86 international matches. Despite Germany’s struggles to win a major title during much of his time with the team, he described his experience with the national side as an exceptionally important chapter of his life.

The defender was part of Germany’s squad at several major competitions, including the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. Germany’s campaign at the 2026 tournament ended with a defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32, which proved to be Rüdiger’s final appearance for the national team.

One of the highlights of his international career came in 2017 when Germany won the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. Rüdiger also experienced difficult tournament exits, including Germany’s early departures at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

In his retirement message, Rüdiger expressed gratitude to the teammates with whom he shared his international career, highlighting the friendships and memorable experiences developed both on and off the pitch.

He also acknowledged the coaches and members of Germany’s technical and support staff who contributed to his development. Among those he specifically thanked were former national team coaches Joachim Löw, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann, as well as former youth-team mentor Horst Hrubesch.

The Real Madrid defender also reserved special appreciation for Germany supporters, recalling the strong backing the national team received during Euro 2024, which was staged on home soil.

Rüdiger’s decision comes as Germany prepares to move into a new phase under newly appointed head coach Jürgen Klopp. His retirement will create another opening in the national team’s defence as Germany looks to introduce younger players into the squad.

The former Chelsea defender, who has enjoyed a successful club career with Roma, Chelsea and Real Madrid, said his focus will now shift completely towards his club commitments.

Rüdiger leaves the Germany setup having earned 86 caps over more than a decade, closing a significant chapter of his football career while making room for a new generation of defenders to establish themselves on the international stage.
