ANTHONY JOSHUA’S ACCIDENT: AY CONDEMNS UNSAFE ROADS, SAYS LIVES ARE CHEAPLY TREATED IN NIGERIA
Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has slammed the government over the poor state of roads following a fatal accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
Joshua was recently involved in a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State. Reports indicate that he was travelling in a Lexus SUV (registration number KRD 850 HN) when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. While Joshua sustained minor injuries, two occupants of the vehicle tragically lost their lives on the spot.
Reacting to the incident on Instagram, AY expressed his grief and concern over the value of human life in Nigeria. He highlighted the tragedy of a Nigerian athlete who has represented the country proudly on the global stage returning home, only for two close associates to die due to unsafe roads.
He criticized the failures of road safety systems, infrastructure, and leadership, questioning how many more lives must be lost before significant action is taken.

AY wrote:
*"Today is a painful reminder of how cheaply lives are treated in Nigeria. It is devastating that a Nigerian who has carried our flag with pride across the world can return home only for two of his closest associates to meet death on our roads. Two precious lives gone—friends, brothers, people with families, dreams, and futures. This is not fate; this is failure—failure of our road safety systems, failure of infrastructure, failure of leadership. How many more must die before our roads are made safe? How long will we keep celebrating excellence abroad while exposing our own people to danger at home? This tragedy is traumatising and unacceptable.
A country that cannot protect its people is a country in urgent need of accountability. We need safer roads, proper enforcement, effective emergency response systems, and a government that treats human life as sacred, not disposable. My heart is heavy for Anthony Joshua. My prayers are with the families of the departed and everyone grieving this senseless loss. May their souls rest in perfect peace. Nigeria must do better. Lives depend on it."*
Earlier this year, AY had expressed his appreciation for Anthony Joshua, acknowledging the impact of the boxer's words on him.
In other matters, AY has previously cautioned Nigerians on the legal implications of damaging the Naira, emphasizing that such actions undermine the integrity of the national currency. He has also warned the public to be cautious of fake friends who exploit negative situations for personal gain.
Sharing reflections on social media, AY highlighted its double-edged nature, noting that foolish opinions are often praised while wise insights may be criticized. He stressed the importance of coexistence and peace, encouraging the public to set high standards for life and manage frustrations responsibly.
