ANOTHER PRINCE STEPS FORWARD FOR AWUJALE OF IJEBULAND THRONE
A new contender has emerged in the race for the prestigious Awujale throne of Ijebuland: Prince Adebowale Olufeko, a descendant of the Bubiade Family from the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, has officially declared his interest in the revered position.
Olufeko announced his intentions while addressing journalists in Ijebu-Ode on Friday. He described his aspiration as a call to service, cultural preservation, and the unity and development of Ijebuland. A statement detailing his declaration was shared with PUNCH Online on Saturday.
The Awujale throne became vacant following the death of the long-reigning monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (Ogbagba II), in July 2025.
A lawyer, Chartered Arbitrator, and Mediator, Olufeko believes that his lineage, professional experience, and commitment to the people of Ijebuland qualify him as a legitimate candidate for the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, which is next in line to produce the monarch.
“I am offering myself because I believe our people deserve a future that is peaceful, prosperous, and united,” Olufeko stated. “My aspiration is rooted in duty, loyalty, service, and a deep commitment to the progress of Ijebuland.”
He explained that his legal and mediation background would enable him to contribute to the kingdom’s socio-economic development while positioning Ijebuland for greater global engagement. He also plans to elevate the Ojude Oba Festival into a globally recognized cultural and economic event.
Olufeko pledged to empower youths, artisans, professionals, and vulnerable groups, noting that such initiatives are already part of his ongoing community efforts. He promised to attract both local and international development opportunities through his global exposure and networks.
Describing the Awujale throne as a sacred trust, he said, “The Awujale throne carries the spirit and history of our people. It must be protected with honor, wisdom, and a clear vision for the future.”
Among his proposed initiatives is the establishment of a Polo Club in honor of the late Oba Adetona, recognizing the Ijebu people's historical reputation as skilled horse riders.
Olufeko assured that he would work closely with chiefs, kingmakers, governments, and other stakeholders to ensure peace, unity, and sustained development across Ijebuland. He also pledged to uphold Ijebu culture, customs, and traditions with integrity and inclusiveness.
Furthermore, he stated that the creation of Ijebu State would be a major priority if he ascends to the throne.
The prince expressed gratitude to the Olori Ebis, especially the members of the Bubiade Royal Family, for preserving unity over the years. He acknowledged the traditional rulers, chiefs, and custodians of Ijebu heritage for their loyalty to the late Awujale.
He also commended Dr. Sonny Kuku, the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, for his role as Regent, and praised Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his efforts in infrastructure, culture, and economic development in the region.
“With unity and collective effort, Ijebuland will rise to a new level of greatness,” Olufeko declared.
As multiple declarations continue to emerge, preparations for selecting a new Awujale of Ijebuland are gradually taking shape.
