ANDER HERRERA RETURNS HOME TO ZARAGOZA WITHOUT A SALARY

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has explained his decision to return to boyhood club Real Zaragoza and play without receiving a salary, describing the move as a personal dream rather than a financial decision.

The 37-year-old Spaniard returned to Zaragoza this summer after leaving Argentine club Boca Juniors. His return comes 15 years after he left the Spanish side and represents an emotional homecoming for a player whose professional career has taken him to some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Herrera said returning to the club where he grew up was something he had wanted to achieve before ending his playing career. He explained that Zaragoza gave him the opportunity to develop not only as a footballer but also as a person, making the decision to return particularly meaningful.

Despite having the opportunity to continue earning significant money elsewhere, Herrera chose to play for Zaragoza without a salary. He said his financial situation allowed him to make the decision and that he wanted his return to serve as a gift to the club and the city that helped shape his career.

The experienced midfielder also plans to donate his salary to the club's foundation, further underlining his commitment to helping Zaragoza during a difficult period. He said his motivation is centred on contributing his experience and quality to the club rather than negotiating a lucrative contract.

Zaragoza have endured a prolonged decline since their relegation from La Liga in the 2012–13 season. The club have since fallen as far as Spain's third tier, and Herrera hopes his experience at the highest level can help the team begin its journey back towards the top divisions.

During his career, Herrera played for Athletic Club, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Boca Juniors. His time at Manchester United brought major honours, including the Europa League and FA Cup, while he also won domestic titles in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

Now back in Zaragoza, Herrera believes the club should focus on rebuilding rather than dwelling on its difficult past. He has urged his teammates to approach the challenge positively and concentrate on creating a better future.

His return has generated considerable excitement among Zaragoza supporters, who see the experienced midfielder's decision as a powerful demonstration of loyalty to his hometown club.

Herrera is expected to make his competitive return when Zaragoza face Gimnastic de Tarragona, as the veteran midfielder begins what he hopes will be a final chapter defined by service to the club where his professional journey began.
