Security operatives apprehend 28-year-old suspect attempting to transport stolen telecommunications infrastructure, reiterating zero tolerance for critical national asset destruction

The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a suspect in connection with the vandalism and theft of telecommunication mast cables in Awka, the state capital.

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mungadi Haruna, confirmed the arrest in a statement released by the command's Public Relations Officer, stating that the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Ebuka Nwosu, was apprehended during a routine night patrol by anti-vandal operatives.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect was caught in possession of a heavy-duty bag containing several meters of armored telecommunications cables and specialized cutting tools, which were vandalized from a mobile telecommunications base transceiver station in the area.

Upon interrogation, the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the origin of the recovered materials, after which he confessed to belonging to a syndicate targeting critical public and private infrastructure across the state.

The command emphasized that the destruction of critical national assets directly jeopardizes public communications network stability, business activities, and public security efforts.

The NSCDC assured members of the public that full-scale investigations are ongoing to track down fleeing syndicate members and scrap metal buyers who facilitate the illicit trade, adding that the suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of formal investigations.
