The Anambra State Government has ordered the closure of Otuocha Company Market following renewed violence between Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam communities in Anambra East Local Government Area.

Five people were killed in the latest clash, while several others were injured and properties, including the palace of the traditional ruler of Aguleri, were damaged or burnt. (punchng.com)

The violence was linked to a dispute between the two communities over their boundary. Traditional rulers in the affected communities said the disagreement escalated after an attempt to install a signpost and security cameras in the area.

Deputy Governor Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who is also chairman of the state Boundary Committee, announced the market’s closure during an assessment visit to the affected communities.

He said commercial activities would remain suspended until the government completed its assessment and investigations into the incident.

The Anambra State Police Command condemned the violence and urged residents and community leaders to maintain peace while investigations continue.

The command said anyone found responsible would face prosecution.
