In a shocking case of deception, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old woman, Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, for allegedly faking her own kidnapping to extort money from her parents.

Nmesoma reportedly staged the abduction with her boyfriend, 24-year-old Chibuike Ogbu, demanding a ransom of ₦15 million. After negotiations, her parents transferred ₦3 million into her account, believing she had truly been abducted.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday. He revealed that operatives recovered ₦1.2 million in cash from the suspects, part of the ransom already withdrawn.

“Investigations uncovered that the supposed victim conspired with her boyfriend to stage her own abduction. They demanded ₦15 million, but after negotiations, ₦3 million was paid into her account,” Ikenga explained.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act, describing it as a reflection of “rising moral decay” in society. He urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to do more in instilling discipline, integrity, and sound values in young people.

The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
