AMNESTY DEMANDS REVERSAL OF MADONNA VARSITY NURSING STUDENTS’ SANCTIONS

International human rights organization faults severe disciplinary measures imposed on undergraduates over a viral social media video, urging university authorities to prioritize dialogue and mediation

Amnesty International has called on the management of Madonna University, Elele Campus, Rivers State, to immediately rescind the expulsion of a final-year nursing student and the suspension of fourteen other 500-level students.

The international rights group issued the demand via an official statement, describing the institution's disciplinary actions as harsh, disproportionate, and detrimental to the affected undergraduates' educational futures.

The sanctions were initially enforced following the students' participation in a viral social media trend involving a lighthearted clip captioned, "No sick oo, Na Gen Z full hospital," which circulated widely across digital platforms.

According to Amnesty International, while academic institutions maintain the prerogative to regulate student conduct, heavy-handed punishments such as outright expulsion violate fundamental rights to freedom of expression, education, and academic freedom.

The organization emphasized that the punitive measures create an unwarranted chilling effect on student expression and fail to align with international human rights standards regarding proportionate disciplinary actions.

Furthermore, the rights advocacy body urged the university administration to explore alternative avenues for resolution, including dialogue, counselling, and mediation, rather than truncating years of rigorous academic training.

The intervention adds to mounting appeals from various student bodies, including the National Association of Nigerian Students, calling on university leadership to temper justice with mercy and review the punitive rulings.
