The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has welcomed the decision by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to suspend the enforcement of new regulations on telecom-related lending services.

ALTON described the suspension as a positive step that will allow for further stakeholder engagement and clearer policy alignment within the telecommunications sector in Nigeria.

According to the group, the initial framework raised concerns among operators regarding compliance requirements, consumer data protection, and operational impact on mobile network services.

Industry stakeholders had previously argued that clearer guidelines were needed to avoid disruptions to digital lending platforms that rely on telecom infrastructure.

ALTON stated that continued dialogue between regulators and industry players is essential to ensure that policies support innovation while protecting consumers.

The association also urged the FCCPC to maintain an open consultation process as it reviews the regulatory framework for telecom-enabled financial services.

Experts say the suspension could help ease tensions in the sector while paving the way for a more balanced and sustainable regulatory approach.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
