ALONSO BEGINS CHELSEA REIGN WITH DRAMATIC WIN OVER FULHAM

Xabi Alonso marked his first Premier League game as Chelsea manager with a 3-2 victory over Fulham in a lively London derby at Craven Cottage.

Chelsea needed just 31 seconds to break the deadlock, with João Pedro finding the net almost immediately after kick-off. The early goal gave the visitors a bright start, but Fulham gradually grew into the contest and levelled through Josh King after Chelsea were punished for a defensive error.

The hosts carried that momentum into the remainder of the first half, leaving Chelsea with work to do after the break.

The Blues responded strongly, however, as Morgan Rogers put them back in front following a move involving summer arrival Maxence Lacroix. Rogers' goal added another memorable moment to his competitive debut for Chelsea.

Palmer subsequently increased the advantage with Chelsea's third goal, continuing his influence in the attacking third and putting Alonso's side in a seemingly comfortable position.

Fulham refused to surrender, with Gonzalo García reducing the deficit and setting up a nervy final spell. Chelsea were forced to defend under sustained pressure before eventually seeing out the game.

The victory gives Alonso an encouraging start to his Premier League tenure, although Chelsea's late defensive struggles will provide plenty for the new manager to assess ahead of their next fixture.
