The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has faulted U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Christians are being killed in Nigeria, describing the statement as “incorrect and capable of creating unnecessary tension.”

Speaking on Sunday at his palace during his 82nd birthday celebration, the monarch said Trump’s remarks misrepresent Nigeria’s situation and unfairly portray the country before the international community.

Akiolu stressed that Nigerians of different faiths have lived together peacefully for decades, noting that both Christians and Muslims share common communities, celebrations, and challenges. He maintained that the country’s security challenges are not religiously motivated but caused by “misguided individuals and criminal groups.”

“This comment by the U.S. President is not only incorrect but can create unnecessary tension in Nigeria, something we cannot afford now,” Akiolu said.

The traditional ruler cautioned international leaders to verify information before issuing public statements, adding that “careless comments can damage Nigeria’s image globally.”

He further warned that Nigeria cannot afford internal division at a time when the country is undergoing economic and security reforms, urging citizens to maintain peace and unity across ethnic and religious lines.

The monarch also used the opportunity to advocate for special recognition and federal support for Lagos State, describing it as the “economic powerhouse of the nation” that continues to bear the weight of national development.

“Lagos deserves special recognition because of its population size and its central role in Nigeria’s economy,” he added.

Akiolu concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain united and focused on rebuilding the nation rather than succumbing to divisive external influences.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
