ALLEGED CHRISTIAN GENOCIDE: RESPECT NIGERIA’S SOVEREIGNTY — INC TELLS TRUMP
The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called for restraint and respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat to deploy American troops to Nigeria to protect Christians from terrorist attacks in the country’s northern region.
Speaking on Wednesday, the President of the INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, said Nigeria deserves to be treated with respect in the comity of nations and that its sovereignty must not be undermined by any foreign power, regardless of status or influence.
“As the President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), I align with the general sentiment of Nigerians who reject foreign intervention and uphold national sovereignty,” Prof. Okaba stated.
He, however, urged the Federal Government to see the current global attention as an opportunity to address lingering insecurity and strengthen the protection of lives and property across the country—irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation.
Call for Diplomacy and Internal Security Reforms
Okaba advised the Nigerian government to approach the matter diplomatically, emphasizing that open dialogue with the United States is essential to prevent a diplomatic rift.
“Given the context, I emphasize the importance of dialogue and cooperation while ensuring the protection of Nigeria’s interests and territorial integrity,” he said.
He further noted that since the Nigerian government has already expressed readiness to collaborate with the U.S. in combating terrorism, such cooperation must be based on mutual respect and adherence to international norms.
“To avoid kinetic confrontation with the United States, Nigeria should prioritize strengthening its internal security measures and engage diplomatically to address concerns about religious freedom and violence,” Okaba added.
