Two prominent traditional rulers in Oyo State, the Alaafin of Oyo and the Soun of Ogbomoso, were absent on Tuesday as Governor Seyi Makinde officially kicked off activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of Oyo State.

The flag-off ceremony, held in Ibadan, marked the beginning of a series of events lined up to commemorate the state’s golden jubilee since its creation in 1976.

While several traditional rulers, political leaders, and stakeholders were in attendance, the absence of the Alaafin of Oyo and the Soun of Ogbomoso was noticeable at the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Makinde described the 50th anniversary as a moment of reflection on the state’s journey so far, as well as an opportunity to chart a new course for sustainable development.

“Oyo State has come a long way in the last 50 years. This celebration is not just about looking back, but also about recommitting ourselves to building a prosperous future for our people,” the governor said.

Makinde noted that the anniversary celebrations would showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage, economic potential, and developmental strides across different sectors, including education, infrastructure, health, and security.

He added that the golden jubilee would also serve as a platform to honour individuals and institutions that have contributed significantly to the growth and development of Oyo State over the decades.

Although no official reason was given for the absence of the Alaafin and the Soun, the governor assured that the anniversary activities were inclusive and that traditional institutions remained critical partners in the state’s development agenda.

Oyo State, carved out of the old Western State on February 3, 1976, is one of Nigeria’s most historically significant states, known for its deep-rooted cultural heritage and political influence.

The 50th anniversary celebrations are expected to feature cultural festivals, public lectures, exhibitions, and community engagement programmes across the state.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
