The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has dismissed reports suggesting that a new Chief Imam of Oyo has been appointed, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement released on Monday by the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the palace clarified that the selection process for a new Chief Imam is still ongoing.

“The attention of the Alaafin’s Palace has been drawn to unfounded speculations suggesting the appointment of a new Chief Imam for Oyo. We urge the people of Oyo and the general public to disregard such baseless claims. No candidate has been selected for the revered Islamic leadership seat,” the statement read.

The palace emphasized that only the Alaafin holds the constitutional and traditional authority to appoint the Chief Imam of Oyo.

Oba Owoade also appealed for calm and patience among residents, assuring them that due consultations are in progress and the rightful candidate will be announced at the appropriate time.

“The exclusive right to appoint a Chief Imam rests solely with His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo,” the statement added.

With this clarification, the Alaafin urged the public to disregard rumours and await the official announcement from the palace.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
