Akwa Ibom State is set to host the maiden La Reine Cycling Marathon in Uyo from October 26 to November 1, 2026, with amateur and professional cyclists expected to participate.

The event convener, Maobong Umoh, announced the competition during a press conference in Uyo, saying the marathon is intended to promote cycling, showcase young Nigerian talents and highlight Akwa Ibom’s tourism attractions.

The competition will feature several categories, including elite male and female professionals, amateurs, juniors, intermediate riders, veterans and fun riders. The organisers said cash prizes and wellness packages would be announced in October.

According to Umoh, the event has received approval from the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and the Union Cycliste Internationale and will be conducted in line with international cycling regulations.

She said routes had been mapped out for the competition, while ambulances, road marshals, Federal Road Safety Corps personnel and medical teams would be deployed to support the event and protect participants and other road users.

Umoh said the marathon would also provide an opportunity to showcase Uyo and other parts of Akwa Ibom while promoting sports and tourism.

The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Akpan, pledged media support for the event.
