AKWA IBOM REVENUE FROM TRICYCLE, MINIBUS DRIVERS HITS ₦14M WEEKLY
The Akwa Ibom State Government says its electronic ticketing system for commercial tricycle and minibus operators in Uyo now generates about ₦14 million every week.
The Commissioner for Transport, Dr Anthony Luke, disclosed this during a ministerial briefing in the state capital, attributing the collections to the adoption of electronic payments.
According to Luke, tricycle operators pay ₦200 for their daily tickets, while minibus drivers pay ₦300. He said the system generates approximately ₦2 million daily, with payments going directly into government accounts through the Treasury Single Account.
The commissioner explained that the digital platform had helped identify operators who previously failed to purchase their tickets, improving revenue collection from the sector.
He added that 143 enforcement personnel had been recruited to support the ticketing process.
The Ministry of Transport worked with the Ministry of Science and Digital Economy to introduce the technology supporting the payment system.
Beyond revenue collection, the government said cameras installed around Uyo would help monitor commercial transport operations and support passenger safety.
Officials said the monitoring system could also assist security agencies in identifying operators and tracing vehicles linked to criminal activities.
