Uyo, Akwa Ibom – January 29, 2026: Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a suspected car snatcher and recovered a stolen Toyota Corolla (DKA 337 CB) in Uyo.

The suspect, Sunday Okon, from Nna Enin Village in Uruan Local Government Area, was traced to Nkwot Ikono Village, Etim Ekpo LGA, following a distress call received on January 20 during a routine night patrol near Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

DSP Timfon John, the command’s Public Relations Officer, said the victim, a Bolt driver, reported that his vehicle had been stolen at gunpoint. “The officers swiftly mobilised to the scene, tracked the suspect through intelligence, and recovered the vehicle,” the statement said.

Okon reportedly confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and recover their weapons.

Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare commended the officers for their prompt response and urged the public to remain vigilant and report criminal activities.

While Akwa Ibom is generally regarded as one of the safer states in the South-South, Uyo has recently seen a rise in armed robberies and carjackings targeting transport operators.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
