Senate President Godswill Akpabio has described Akwa Ibom State as an emerging destination for tourism and investment, citing recent infrastructure projects and developments across the state.

Akpabio spoke during the inauguration of a 4.12-kilometre internal road network in the GRA area of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. The project includes an outfall drainage system and additional erosion reclamation works. 

The Senate President commended Governor Umo Eno for projects including the completion of the Victor Attah International Airport terminal, the acquisition of additional aircraft for Ibom Air, the ongoing International Convention Centre and hotel project, and the international market in Ikot Ekpene.

Akpabio said the state had moved beyond its previous role as a transit route between Port Harcourt and Calabar, arguing that infrastructure and other development efforts had increased its appeal to visitors and investors.

He also said the development of transportation infrastructure and other facilities would support economic activity and improve connectivity within the state.

Governor Eno thanked the Senate President for his support and participation in major projects across Akwa Ibom.

The comments came as the state marked its 39th anniversary, with officials highlighting ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure, tourism, aviation and other areas of the economy.
