AKPABIO DENIES MAKING ‘RECKLESS STATEMENT’ AGAINST TRUMP OVER INVASION THREAT
Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed reports alleging that he made a reckless comment in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to invade Nigeria over alleged Christian killings.
The report, which circulated online, claimed Akpabio had criticized Trump and told him to “focus on U.S. issues” instead of Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Reacting in a statement on Thursday, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Senate President, described the report as “a malicious and fabricated post”, insisting that Akpabio never made such remarks — publicly or privately.
“The post is a total falsehood and a desperate attempt to incite misunderstanding between Senator Godswill Akpabio and U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as between Nigeria and its international partners,” Eyiboh stated.
He challenged the media platform responsible for the post to provide proof of its claims, adding that the accompanying photograph was “deceptively used to lend credibility to a fake quote.”
Eyiboh emphasized that Senator Akpabio is a statesman and diplomat who respects international relations and would never comment on matters outside Nigeria’s foreign policy jurisdiction.
“Senator Akpabio holds President Trump in high regard as a leader of a great nation and would never make any statement that could inflame diplomatic tensions,” he added.
The Office of the Senate President urged Nigerians to disregard the viral post, describing it as an act of “digital recklessness” aimed at spreading confusion and damaging reputations.
Eyiboh reaffirmed that Akpabio remains committed to “transparency, truth, and responsible communication both locally and internationally.”
