Former media aide to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande, has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to promote seasoned Southern politicians such as Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi as presidential candidates.

Akande said both Amaechi and Obi have the credentials to mount a credible challenge against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Friday during an appearance on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, he stressed that opposition parties serious about contesting power must position credible and experienced leaders from the South.

“If they were serious, people like Rotimi Amaechi, people like Peter Obi ought to be the ones to be pushed forward,” Akande said.

He highlighted Amaechi’s extensive career in public service, noting his experience across multiple levels of government.

“Look at Amaechi. He has been a speaker, a governor, a minister, and he was second in the APC. Tremendous career in politics and opportunities in service. He also led infrastructure development,” Akande added.

He emphasized the need for a Southern candidate with proven governance credentials who can compete directly with President Tinubu.

Akande also cautioned that without a strong alternative, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may continue to dominate opposition politics ahead of the 2027 election.

“As things stand, if Atiku continues to pursue his ambitions, he could likely forge his way through, as he remains the strongest politician in the party. The shadows of Atiku are still hanging heavily,” he said.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
