AJIBADE SHINES AS SUPER FALCONS EDGE BOTSWANA, WINS WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Nigeria’s Super Falcons continued their impressive run at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Botswana on Thursday night, thanks to a late goal and a standout performance by Rasheedat Ajibade.
Ajibade, who was a constant thorn in the flesh of the Botswana defence, was deservedly named Woman of the Match for her energetic display. The 25-year-old started on the right wing but was later moved into midfield after the break, where she controlled the tempo and linked play brilliantly for the Falcons.
The only goal of the game came late in the second half when substitute Esther Okoronkwo delivered a delightful cross that found fellow sub Chiwendu Ihezuo, who calmly slotted home to seal the win for Nigeria.
This means Nigeria have now recorded back-to-back wins in the tournament. Interestingly, Okoronkwo had also scooped the Woman of the Match award in Nigeria’s opening game against Algeria, showing the depth and impact of the team’s bench strength.
With six points from two games, Justine Madugu’s side will now turn their attention to a rematch against Algeria at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, hoping to maintain their perfect start and top Group B.
Fans will be eager to see if Ajibade can deliver another commanding performance as the Super Falcons chase a record-extending 10th continental title.
