A’IBOM ASPIRANT FAULTS POOR POLICY IMPLEMENTATION
House of Representatives aspirant for Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, Idongesit Wilson, says Nigeria’s major governance challenge is not a lack of policies but weak implementation.
Wilson, who spoke in Uyo, said many well-designed government policies fail because public servants are not adequately trained or properly positioned to deliver results.
He called for urgent capacity building in the civil service, stressing that effective governance depends on placing competent people in the right roles and ensuring accountability in execution.
According to him, “Nigeria doesn’t lack policies, the real problem is implementation,” adding that without trained personnel, policies will continue to produce little impact.
The public health expert also linked poor implementation to weaknesses in the health sector, especially at the primary healthcare level, where early intervention is often critical but poorly handled.
He further advocated stronger public health awareness campaigns, particularly on conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, noting that prevention through education remains more effective and affordable than treatment.
Beyond healthcare, Wilson called for reforms in education and economic empowerment, urging a shift from certificate-based learning to vocational and practical skills development for young people.
He also recommended targeted support for small businesses and market traders, as well as stronger partnerships between host communities and companies operating in them.
Wilson maintained that sustainable development will only be achieved when leaders and citizens prioritise collective progress over personal interest, and when policies are properly implemented rather than repeatedly redesigned.
