The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, has paid a glowing tribute to the late Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, marking 60 years since his death.

The tribute, shared during a commemorative reflection in Nigeria, honoured Fajuyi’s role in Nigerian history, particularly his loyalty and sacrifice during the political crisis of 1966.

Fajuyi, who served as the Military Governor of the old Western Region, is widely remembered for his decision to stand by Aguiyi-Ironsi during the coup that led to both their deaths.

The Aguiyi-Ironsi family described him as a symbol of courage, unity, and selflessness, noting that his legacy continues to represent rare patriotism in public service.

They also called for renewed national reflection on leadership, unity, and the importance of preserving historical memory for younger generations.

Historians say the relationship between Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi remains one of the most significant examples of loyalty in Nigeria’s military history.

The commemoration comes as the country continues to reflect on key events that shaped its political and military evolution over the decades.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
