A political exchange between Omoyele Sowore and APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, alongside developments in Nigeria’s Ebola response, leads this afternoon’s news roundup.

Sowore and Basiru clash over Presidential Villa request

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru have exchanged criticism over the AAC’s request to hold its campaign council inauguration at the Presidential Villa.

Basiru dismissed the request during a television appearance and questioned the party’s electoral strength. Sowore responded by referring to their history as student activists and accusing Basiru of abandoning the principles they once shared. Basiru rejected Sowore’s account of parts of that history.

WHO urges calm over Nigeria’s Ebola case

The World Health Organization has urged Nigerians to remain calm following the confirmation of a Bundibugyo Ebola case in Abuja.

WHO Regional Director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, said one imported case does not, by itself, mean Nigeria is experiencing an outbreak. The organisation is supporting authorities with investigation, contact tracing, testing and infection-control measures.

Travel restrictions placed on identified contacts

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has directed that 46 identified contacts of the Ebola patient be placed on a 21-day no-fly list.

The measure is intended to support monitoring and reduce the risk of further spread. Being identified as a contact does not mean a person has contracted the virus.

Kaduna journalist granted bail after conviction set aside

A court has reportedly set aside the conviction of Kaduna journalist Farida Isiak and granted her bail.

Her prosecution followed a Facebook post criticising police treatment of her parents. The case drew concern from journalists’ representatives and rights organisations over her treatment and access to a fair hearing.

PRP alleges plot to divide its ranks

The Peoples Redemption Party has alleged a financially backed effort to create divisions within the party and weaken opposition cooperation ahead of 2027.

National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed urged members to resist unauthorised activities. The party’s statement did not name those allegedly involved or provide evidence establishing the claims.
