AFTER 19 YEARS OF RIFT, OBASANJO PUBLICLY FORGIVES FAYOSE AT 65TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has officially reconciled with former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, ending a political rift that lasted nearly two decades.
Obasanjo announced the reconciliation on Saturday during Fayose’s 65th birthday celebration in Lagos—a gathering that drew politicians, friends, and supporters. In a viral video from the event, the former president reflected on their long-standing disagreement and why the moment was significant.
According to Obasanjo, the occasion was not just about celebrating Fayose’s milestone age but also about “reflection and correction.” He acknowledged that while Fayose may not be his “best political child,” his achievements cannot be ignored.
He revealed that Fayose did not reach out to him directly for reconciliation. Instead, he sent former Minister of Aviation Osita Chidoka to deliver the message on his behalf.
“When Osita came to sound me out, I told him, ‘If he has sent you and you have delivered the message, then tell him you have delivered it,’” Obasanjo recounted.
Obasanjo then confirmed that Fayose had asked for forgiveness—and he has granted it.
“So, you have asked for forgiveness, and as far as I’m concerned, you are forgiven. But the right lessons must be learnt,” he declared.
The feud between the two political figures dates back to 2006 and had led to several public confrontations and harsh exchanges over the years. Their reconciliation marks an unexpected but welcomed closure to one of Nigeria’s most talked-about political disagreements.
