‘AFRICAN FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS CAN COMPETE GLOBALLY’
African financial institutions have the potential to compete effectively on the global stage if they leverage technology, innovation, and strategic partnerships, according to a leading financial expert.
Mr. Chinedu Eze, a senior executive at a prominent African bank, made the assertion on Friday while delivering a keynote address at the Africa Finance Summit in Lagos. He highlighted the rapid digital transformation taking place across the continent and the growing sophistication of African banks.
“African financial institutions can compete globally. With the right investments in technology, talent, and governance, we can deliver world-class services and expand our influence beyond the continent,” Eze stated.
He cited examples of African banks that have successfully expanded into other markets and adopted innovative solutions to serve their customers. Eze also emphasised the importance of regulatory support and collaboration among financial institutions to create a more integrated and competitive African financial ecosystem.
Participants at the summit agreed that African banks have made significant progress in recent years, particularly in the areas of digital banking, mobile money, and fintech integration. They, however, noted that challenges such as infrastructure deficits, regulatory inconsistencies, and limited access to long-term capital still need to be addressed.
The summit also featured discussions on the role of African financial institutions in supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and promoting cross-border trade and investment. Experts called for the harmonisation of regulations and the development of regional payment systems to facilitate seamless transactions across the continent.
The Africa Finance Summit brought together bankers, regulators, and policymakers from across the continent to discuss strategies for strengthening the African financial sector and enhancing its global competitiveness. The event concluded with a commitment to work together to build a more robust and integrated financial system that can compete on the global stage.
