AFRICA SECURES $1.4BN BOOST FOR ELECTRICITY ACCESS INITIATIVE

African nations have secured a $1.4 billion funding boost to accelerate electricity access initiatives across the continent, marking a significant step towards addressing the energy poverty that affects hundreds of millions of people.

The funding package, announced during a high-level energy summit, will support grid expansion, off-grid solar solutions, and mini-grid projects in underserved communities. Development partners, including multilateral institutions and private investors, committed the resources to help achieve universal electricity access targets.

African Union Commission Chairperson, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomed the investment, noting that reliable power is essential for economic growth, education, healthcare, and industrialisation. “This funding will help close the energy gap and unlock Africa’s potential,” he said.

Priority countries with high electrification deficits are expected to benefit first, with a focus on renewable energy integration to promote sustainability. The initiative also includes capacity-building components for local utilities and regulatory reforms.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the boost will catalyse further private sector participation and contribute to the continent’s broader sustainable development goals.
