AFENIFERE URGES ISSUE-BASED CAMPAIGNS AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on politicians across Nigeria to adopt issue-based campaigns as the 2027 general elections approach.
In a communique issued after its caucus meeting held at the residence of its leader, Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, the group stressed that electioneering should be peaceful and free from violence, thuggery, and character assassination.
The statement, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, also raised concerns about the worsening security situation in the country, particularly in the South-West region.
Afenifere urged governors in the region to take more decisive steps to tackle insecurity, including strengthening local security outfits like Amotekun, improving surveillance, and fast-tracking the establishment of state police.
The group further advised that security efforts should involve collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta, noting that criminal elements often exploit forest routes across these areas.
It also called on the Federal Government to enhance the capacity of security agencies through better equipment, improved welfare, and a mix of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies.
While acknowledging efforts by Bola Tinubu to address national challenges, Afenifere reiterated its long-standing call for restructuring, saying it remains key to achieving sustainable development and stability.
Additionally, the group expressed sympathy with victims of insecurity and commended Nigerian security forces for their sacrifices.
The organisation also announced plans to celebrate the 100th birthday of Fasoranti on May 11, 2026, inviting leaders and stakeholders across Yorubaland to participate.
