AFCON: IWOBI REVEALS WHY OLA AINA STRUGGLED AGAINST IVORY COAST’S ADINGRA IN FINAL
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has shed light on why teammate Ola Aina struggled against Ivory Coast’s winger, Simon Adingra, during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
On February 11, 2024, Aina, who had been one of Nigeria’s most reliable performers throughout the tournament, endured a tough night as Adingra tormented the Super Eagles’ defence. The Nottingham Forest full-back failed to stop the winger, who delivered both assists as the Ivorians came from behind to defeat Nigeria 2-1 and claim the title.
However, Iwobi has now revealed that Aina was playing through the pain of a serious injury.
“For those that don’t know, I am sure Ola has already put it out there in many different podcasts and interviews. He played with a grade 2c hamstring injury — I don’t know how,” Iwobi disclosed on Episode 2 of The Bassey and Iwobi Show.
Despite the heartbreak in Ivory Coast, Nigeria has already booked a spot at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, with hopes of bouncing back stronger to lift the trophy.
